The injection of Botox and dermal fillers ranks among the top non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed each year. These products banish the visible signs of aging by removing folds, wrinkles, and fine lines, thus making the skin firmer, smoother, and more radiant.
Botox, the brand name for botulinum toxin A, treats wrinkles and fine lines by inhibiting the actions of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which triggers muscle contractions. Patients can resume their normal activities after the Botox injection but should minimize sun exposure. The effects of Botox last up to six months, after which wrinkles begin to reappear, and re-injections are necessary.
Restylane and Perlane
Restylane and Perlane are dermal fillers that contain particles of hyaluronic acid suspended in a gel medium. These two products are essentially the same; their only difference is that Perlane contains larger particles of hyaluronic acid and is more suitable for injections into the deeper layers of the skin. Restylane and Perlane restore the original volume of the skin and last for about six months.
Juvederm is a gel made of hyaluronic acid and works by filling the lines and creases on the face to make them disappear. Repeated injection of this dermal filler stimulates the body’s production of collagen to naturally restore the skin’s volume and structure. The effects of Juvederm on wrinkles and fine lines can last up to a year.
Radiesse is dermal filler composed of hydroxylapatite microsphere suspended in carboxymethylcellulose gel. This product is approved for use as filler of wrinkles and deep creases on the face such as those found around the nose. Radiesse stimulates the production and formation of collagen around the microspheres for longer-lasting wrinkle treatment.
Sculptra Aesthetic effectively replaces collagen that has been lost because of the aging process and restores the original volume and structure of the skin to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. It contains poly-L-lactic acid microspheres and lasts up to one year.
Similar to Botox, Dysport is also a brand name for botulinum toxin A, but according to numerous studies, Dysport has greater efficacy and produces longer-lasting results. It penetrates deeper into the layers of the skin to give smoother skin and a naturally relaxed face.
